Do manuscrito numa garrafa à era digital: Um estudo de corpus paralelo com a tradução de quatro contos de Edgar Allan Poe

Abstract

The following study presents a research proposal based on the translations of literary texts concerning four different tales written by the North-American author Edgar Allan Poe: The fall of the House of Usher, The Tell-Tale Heart, Manuscript found in a bottle, and Berenice. Such translations have been presented to the public in the books Antologia de Contos Extraordinários (1959; 2010) by Brenno Silveira and also in Histórias extraordinárias de Allan Poe (1975;1998), by Clarice Lispector, for the specific purpose of comparing the styles of both translators as well as their lexical choices. Firstly, the main goal of this PhD dissertation is to provide an analysis of these tales in order to examine content words (including nouns and adjectives) that are most common and most meaningful according to the original text. Secondly, it has been identified whether the meaning of such words has been preserved as stated in its corresponding translation so that the essential elements of these plots will keep their regular flow. Furthermore, language translation features will be identified along with a detailed anlysis of the approaches proposed by the authors. Such analysis will be conducted according to Corpus-Based Translation Studies (BAKER,1993; 1995; 1996; 2000), (CAMARGO, 2005, 2007) and Corpus Linguistics (TOGNINI-BONELLI, 2001), in addition to others who have shown the positive effects on Translation Studies once corpora has been used. The use of WordSmith Tools software has allowed the user to identify the style of the translators, their particular choices of grammar and vocabulary that are essential to keep the key elements in the plot and consequently, analyse its language translation features. As for the methodological component, it is based on Beber Sardinha’s studies (2004) regarding theoretical and methodological issues as well as the use of electronic corpora in support of the development of studies in translated texts.
