Migração e identidade: a presença islâmico-senegalesa em Toledo, Pr (2014-2020)

Abstract

Toledo is a city situated in the West of the State of Paraná, Brazil. Recently, Toledo has received immigrants from different nationalities, especially from Haiti and Senegal. Often, population displacement is responsible for changes and issues related to the personal identity and feeling of territoriality and belonging of the immigrant. Moreover, the different tradition and habits of the destination place are usually another challenge. In this study, it was proposed the analysis the identity and cultural implications of the recent (2014-2020) Islamic-Senegalese migration in Toledo, PR. Besides the theoretical reference, the study is based on individual observations and collection of oral testimonies from Senegalese immigrants living in the city, as well as from people involved in the process of adapting and welcoming immigrants to Toledo, PR. The group of Senegalese living in the city is mostly composed of men between 20 and 45 years old who came to Brazil for labor and economic reasons. Immigrants practitioners of the Sufi currents of Islam and associated to the Mourid and Tidjane confraternities indicated the language, the food, the climate and homesickness as the greatest difficulties experienced.
