Abstract: This research proposes to analyze the resonances of the nation-state project, constituted from the victory of Vargas's regime in 1930, in the region of Chapecó. Starting from this premise, the ideals of progress and civilization engendered, mainly with the launch of the March to the West program, are unraveled in the process of inflection of the expansion of the capital frontier towards the West. In this way, the construct of the State desired for the region is visualized in its complexity, especially in its relationship with land speculation, natural resource exploitation, and ethnic/cultural inculcation, carried out by the private agents of colonization. To fulfill this intent, the use of diverse sources allowed for a greater understanding of the theme under discussion. We used journalistic sources, with emphasis on periodicals, such as A Voz de Chapecó, which embodied the colonizer's idealization of civilization. Alongside this, official sources, produced within the bureaucratic framework of the Estado Novo regime, provide an elucidation of the desired state archetype for the West, in which Chapecó was situated. This approach allows us to understand, with greater precision, the dynamics of state construction in light of its relationship with private capital, with the aim of transforming the uncultivated and wild hinterland into a new civilized and dynamic frontier for capital. Furthermore, it relativizes the teleological narrative applied to Chapecó through the crystallization of the ideal of private business initiative as the selected agent for the economic/social transformation of the region, seeking in the State the leading role in that inflection of what was understood as progress in the first decades of the 20th century and the use of this State in the consolidation of the power of certain social groups.

<title>Salvador uma capital de engenhos 1823-1862</title>

Abstract: This thesis investigates the centrality of sugar mills in the configuration of Salvador between 1823 and 1862, problematizing the determining role of these production units in the territorial, economic, and sociopolitical structuring of the Bahian capital throughout the 19th century. The research challenges the historiographical silence concerning the capital’s agrarian landscape, revealing a territory where sugar production not only coexisted with the city's urbanization but was a crucial vector for its logic of occupation and development. Through the analysis of primary sources, the study unveils the mechanisms of continuity and the complex adaptation strategies of these sugar institutions in the face of the period’s structural transformations. Finally, it concludes that the Soteropolitan sugar mills transcended their strictly productive function, consolidating themselves as nodal points of sociability, the exercise of power, and the maintenance of economic hegemonies within Brazil's main metropolis.

Abstract: This thesis discusses the historical experiences and trajectories of Haitian workers in the city of Cascavel in the Brazilian state of Paraná over the last two decades. During this period, the number of Haitian immigrants in western Paraná, particularly in the municipality of Cascavel, has increased significantly. Many of these workers are employed in occupations characterised by exhausting, repetitive work with little formal education required. These jobs are poorly paid and marked by high rates of physical and mental illness, as well as high staff turnover, largely resulting from the poor working conditions. In this context, the research examined the presence of Haitians in Cascavel, Paraná. It recognises that capital interests pressure the displacement of workers globally, while also questioning how this historical process is experienced by those who move, and how they perceive and interpret their trajectories within this conflictual dynamic of class interests. The research mapped and discussed how Haitians experience the condition of immigrant workers, considering how the prospect of emigration/immigration has historically affected their ways of living and working, and how this may impact their journeys through different countries such as the Dominican Republic and Chile before arriving in Brazil, particularly in western Paraná. Finally, the experience of Haitian workers in Cascavel, Paraná was addressed, including labour relations, ways of life and perceptions of their trajectories and expectations for the future. In this regard, the following sources supported the historical reflection and analysis in this study: (i) interviews with Haitian immigrants; (ii) fieldwork involving visits to places frequented by these individuals; and (iii) materials produced during an extension project for immigrants conducted between 2021 and 2022.

      <title>Modernidades, modernização urbana e experiências do tempo em Cascavel - PR (1968 - 1978)</title>

Abstract: This work aims to analyze the role of the press during the urban modernization process that took place in Cascavel, located in the western region of the state of Paraná, between 1968 and 1978. Within this time frame, two Master Plans were approved in a context of rapid transformations in the city's appearance and in the relationship between rural and urban areas, which ultimately materialized specific conceptions of modernization. The thesis investigates and problematizes a set of symbolic representations of "modernity," "modernization," and urbanization crafted by the local press. In other words, it draws attention to the dynamics of urban configuration and everyday cultural practices that reflected certain notions of the "modern." In fact, the proliferation of images, discourses, and references to "modernity" were produced and disseminated by the local press as constitutive elements of "progress" and modernization. Time—in its dimensions of past, present, and future—was frequently manipulated by newspapers, playing a significant role in the production of meanings and significances related to temporal experiences. The material and symbolic power to assert specific narratives about the past, along with projections of the future and interpretations of the present, were at play, enabling the strengthening of dominant social groups in the city and region. Moreover, the temporal scope of our investigation is limited to a fraction of the Brazilian Civil-Military Dictatorship, during which significant power struggles, political alliances, and connections between the city of Cascavel and national models of "development" and urbanization were woven together. Therefore, the resonance of urban planning principles, formulated during the dictatorial government, found pathways for local implementation.
