Abstract: This dissertation aims to analyze what meanings were produced on the fiftieth anniversary of the abolition of slavery, dated May 13, 1938, from the intelligentsia of the 1930s, Black associations and the Estado Novo regime. It further seeks to examine how those actors contributed towards the construction of a Vargas nation-state based on the ideology of racial harmony. The study focuses on the scenario of the state of São Paulo (capital of São Paulo) and the Federal District (Rio de Janeiro), articulating local dynamics with central government guidelines. The work seeks to unveil the narrative disputes and contradictions between the erasure of black protagonism by the official discourse, which monumentalized the figure of Princess Isabel as "Redeemer", and the resistance and political agency of organized black movements of the period. While centering on the year 1938 (the context of the fiftiethanniversary commemoration), the study also looks back at the years 1931–1937 to analyze the planning and trajectories of Black associations prior to the forced closures imposed by the Estado Novo dictatorship. To this end, the research draws on official documents (The Constitution of 1937 and the Decree-Law nº 427 of May 13, 1938 ) and correspondence (from the Gustavo Capanema Archive), on the commercial press and from mass circulation newspapers such as O Globo, O Jornal, Correio Paulistano and Revista do Arquivo Municipal de São Paulo (RAM), on the Black press and movement, considering the periodicals A Voz da Raça (associated with the Frente Negra Brasileira) and Clarim da Alvorada (associated with the Clube Negro de Cultura Social). The analysis of this commemorative event as a “place of memory” reveals the dispute over collective memory and national identity between the Estado Novo — occasionally backed by intellectuals — and Black associations. These associations had operated autonomously prior to the Estado Novo but, due to censorship, were forced to adopt a diluted and officially apolitical stance following the coup of November 10, 1937. The diverse types of sources helped construct a picture of a period overshadowed by the Integralist Uprising of May 11, 1938 — occurring just two days before the anniversary itself — which impacted the execution of planned commemorative activities. Consequently, the research sought to demonstrate how the fiftieth anniversary of abolition became a vehicle for the Getúlio Vargas government to monumentalize the past in the name of national identity, while simultaneously serving as a stage for political resistance by Black associations.

Abstract: The process of occupation of the Southwest of Paraná began in the 19th century, under the logic of Portuguese colonization, in the region of Campos de Palmas. The western portion of the region, however, was more systematically colonized from the 1940s onward, with the creation of the Colônia Agrícola Nacional General Osório (CANGO), mainly through migrants from Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. This territory was already inhabited by Indigenous peoples and caboclos, which highlights the region’s social complexity. Within the context of CANGO’s activities, part of the land in the Southwest was involved in legal disputes. This conflictual scenario culminated in the Revolta dos Posseiros of 1957, an armed uprising that resulted in the expulsion of private colonization companies such as Clevelândia Industrial e Territorial Ltda. (CITLA). These companies engaged in land grabbing practices, using violence and armed militias, often in articulation with the state government of Paraná. Following their expulsion, the area was declared of public utility in 1962. In this context, the Grupo Executivo para as Terras do Sudoeste do Paraná (GETSOP) was created, with the purpose of regularizing land tenure, issuing property titles, and promoting agricultural modernization. Despite its activities until 1973, agrarian problems persisted, as evidenced by the loss of land among peasants due to indebtedness, forced sales, and limitations imposed by family succession. Simultaneously, initiatives of social and political organization emerged, such as the Associação de Estudos, Orientação e Assistência Rural (ASSESOAR), founded in 1966. Established by Belgian priests of the Congregation of the Sacred Heart Missionaries, with the participation of youth from the Juventude Agrária Católica (JAC), the organization developed actions inspired by the debates of the Second Vatican Council, including Reflection Groups, in which peasants critically analyzed their realities. Other entities, such as Rural Workers’ Unions, also played a significant role, becoming spaces of dispute between assistentialist and more combative perspectives during the 1970s. These experiences contributed to the formation of political, social, and class consciousness among peasants, who began to demand rights and better production conditions. This formative process, articulated with agricultural modernization and broader social contradictions, intensified the struggle for land, culminating in the creation of the Movimento dos Agricultores Sem Terra do Sudoeste do Paraná (MASTES) in 1983. The movement carried out land occupations and roadside encampments, pressuring the state for agrarian reform policies. This research aims to analyze the formative process of peasants in the region between the 1960s and 1980s, considering their organizational experiences and social practices. To this end, it examines the regional historical context, theoretical debates on the peasantry, and the work of ASSESOAR through three dimensions: community, knowledge, and economy. The analysis also includes MASTES and concrete achievements, such as the settlements José Eduardo Raduan and Vitória da União. The study is based on oral interviews with local leaders and documentary sources, including bulletins, booklets, newspapers, photographs, and institutional records produced during the period. It thus understands the Southwest of Paraná as a space of intense social and political struggles and of the formation of peasants as active historical subjects.

Abstract: This study examines the process of becoming a communist through the reading and production of texts between 1928 and 1946. Recognizing the importance of reading in people’s lives, we explore the process of becoming a communist through the readings undertaken by militants of the Communist Party of Brazil (PCB) in Bahia, including figures such as João Falcão and Jorge Amado. The study was conducted based on the mapping of the books, readings, and writings produced by Amado and Falcão. We analyzed the discussions and productions carried out by the PCB, which aimed at the theoretical and political-ideological formation of its militants (These elements supported the reading comprehension of the research participants). We used discourse analysis to understand the construction of meaning carried out by the individuals investigated, based on the readings they engaged in, which influenced their decision to defend communism. The sources showed that reading was important for the development of a conviction in communism, that Vladimir Lenin was considered essential reading, but that it is difficult to determine the amount of material read by Jorge Amado and João Falcão during the period in which they acted as organic intellectuals of the PCB. Even when they abandoned organic militancy, they did not renounce their experiences within the party. For this research, we used the following sources: memoirs, literary works, biographies, interviews, newspapers, and periodicals.

Abstract: This dissertation aims to examine the sociopolitical and cultural tensions and disputes that characterized late Republican society (historical timeframe: 44-27 BCE) through the lens of contemporary biographical/historiographical works from the period. Using as research sources two biographies by Cornelius Nepos, especially the Life of Atticus (a Roman intellectual of the 1st century BCE) and the Life of Epaminondas (a Theban general of the 4th century BCE), we will explore, among other questions, the extent to which the biographer employed his literary work as a means of political intervention in a context marked by social instability and the imminent rise of autocratic power in Rome. Among the structural transformations underway during this period, we observe a certain decline in behavioral norms anchored in the mos maiorum, which helps us understand the moralizing nature of Nepos's biographies and his reiteration of ethical values rooted in the Republican tradition. As a methodological framework, we draw on the works of Antoine Compagnon, Pedro Paulo Funari, Antonio Cândido, and others. Theoretically, we rely on contributions from scholars such as François Dosse, Pierre Bourdieu and Reinhart Koselleck. Additionally, we will engage with concepts such as allelopoiesis, exempla, portrait, and repertoire.
