Abstract: This dissertation aims to analyze what meanings were produced on the fiftieth anniversary of the abolition of slavery, dated May 13, 1938, from the intelligentsia of the 1930s, Black associations and the Estado Novo regime. It further seeks to examine how those actors contributed towards the construction of a Vargas nation-state based on the ideology of racial harmony. The study focuses on the scenario of the state of São Paulo (capital of São Paulo) and the Federal District (Rio de Janeiro), articulating local dynamics with central government guidelines. The work seeks to unveil the narrative disputes and contradictions between the erasure of black protagonism by the official discourse, which monumentalized the figure of Princess Isabel as "Redeemer", and the resistance and political agency of organized black movements of the period. While centering on the year 1938 (the context of the fiftiethanniversary commemoration), the study also looks back at the years 1931–1937 to analyze the planning and trajectories of Black associations prior to the forced closures imposed by the Estado Novo dictatorship. To this end, the research draws on official documents (The Constitution of 1937 and the Decree-Law nº 427 of May 13, 1938 ) and correspondence (from the Gustavo Capanema Archive), on the commercial press and from mass circulation newspapers such as O Globo, O Jornal, Correio Paulistano and Revista do Arquivo Municipal de São Paulo (RAM), on the Black press and movement, considering the periodicals A Voz da Raça (associated with the Frente Negra Brasileira) and Clarim da Alvorada (associated with the Clube Negro de Cultura Social). The analysis of this commemorative event as a “place of memory” reveals the dispute over collective memory and national identity between the Estado Novo — occasionally backed by intellectuals — and Black associations. These associations had operated autonomously prior to the Estado Novo but, due to censorship, were forced to adopt a diluted and officially apolitical stance following the coup of November 10, 1937. The diverse types of sources helped construct a picture of a period overshadowed by the Integralist Uprising of May 11, 1938 — occurring just two days before the anniversary itself — which impacted the execution of planned commemorative activities. Consequently, the research sought to demonstrate how the fiftieth anniversary of abolition became a vehicle for the Getúlio Vargas government to monumentalize the past in the name of national identity, while simultaneously serving as a stage for political resistance by Black associations.

Abstract: This dissertation aims to examine the sociopolitical and cultural tensions and disputes that characterized late Republican society (historical timeframe: 44-27 BCE) through the lens of contemporary biographical/historiographical works from the period. Using as research sources two biographies by Cornelius Nepos, especially the Life of Atticus (a Roman intellectual of the 1st century BCE) and the Life of Epaminondas (a Theban general of the 4th century BCE), we will explore, among other questions, the extent to which the biographer employed his literary work as a means of political intervention in a context marked by social instability and the imminent rise of autocratic power in Rome. Among the structural transformations underway during this period, we observe a certain decline in behavioral norms anchored in the mos maiorum, which helps us understand the moralizing nature of Nepos's biographies and his reiteration of ethical values rooted in the Republican tradition. As a methodological framework, we draw on the works of Antoine Compagnon, Pedro Paulo Funari, Antonio Cândido, and others. Theoretically, we rely on contributions from scholars such as François Dosse, Pierre Bourdieu and Reinhart Koselleck. Additionally, we will engage with concepts such as allelopoiesis, exempla, portrait, and repertoire.

Abstract: This dissertation examines the Padre José Gaertner Museum, located in Marechal Cândido Rondon, Paraná, as a site of memory and as an institutional device for the public production of meanings about the past. The expression “mirrors of power” is employed as an analytical metaphor to suggest that museums, by selecting, organizing, and displaying collections and narratives, do not merely preserve history, but also project authorized representations of it, thereby legitimizing interpretations and forms of collective identification. The study is grounded in the assumption that memory, culture, and identity are socially produced and historically situated constructions, shaped by classificatory practices and symbolic boundaries rather than by fixed or essential attributes. In dialogue with Pierre Nora and Michael Pollak, the research investigates the ways in which regimes of visibility and silencing are constituted, enabling certain repertoires to circulate as public memory while relegating others to the margins. It also draws on Alberti’s perspective that museums should be understood not as neutral repositories, but as spaces in which historical and cultural narratives are actively produced and publicly mediated. Methodologically, the dissertation combines documentary criticism with institutional discourse analysis, drawing on municipal legislation, administrative acts, official correspondence, circulars, and documents related to the Municipal History Commission, as well as records concerning the formation of the collections and the museum’s public administration. It also draws on an oral source produced through an interview with Venilda Saatkamp, who was directly involved in the organization of the collection and in the museum’s institutional trajectory. The findings indicate that the municipal institutionalization of memory contributed to the consolidation of a dominant local memory, often structured through grammars of colonization, progress, and belonging, which shaped the collection, preservation, and exhibition of the past within the museum. The study further examines the museum’s materiality—its collections, exhibition categories, captions, and mediation practices—in order to understand how specific narratives and cultural identifications were stabilized, while other experiences and social actors remained in less visible positions, thus revealing silences and identity disputes in the making of public memory.

Abstract: This dissertation analyzes the novel Ipê e Sakura: em busca da identidade (1988), by Hiroko Nakamura, considering its place within Japanese Brazilian women’s literature and its articulation with the historical novel genre. It is based on the assumption that this literary production constitutes a significant space for representing Japanese immigration to Brazil from a female perspective, historically marginalized in official narratives. Initially, the study discusses the historical novel as an analytical category, highlighting its relationship with historical writing and its ability to articulate memory and fiction. It then examines Nikkei women’s literature, emphasizing its emergence in the context of the 80th anniversary of Japanese immigration to Brazil and its role in the construction of memorial and identity discourses. The analysis focuses on the characters Mizue, Hanako, and Naoko, understood as representatives of different generations of Japanese Brazilian women. Through these figures, the research investigates processes of identity construction, generational conflicts, and tensions between tradition and cultural adaptation. While Mizue and Hanako express values associated with the first generation of immigrants, such as gambarê and gaman, Naoko reflects the reconfiguration of these references in the third generation. Thus, Nakamura’s novel contributes to understanding Japanese immigration as a process marked by continuities and ruptures, highlighting hybrid forms of belonging within the Japanese Brazilian experience.
